Carlos Alberto Alvahydo de Ulhôa Canto joined Ulhôa Canto in 1966 and became a partner alongside the incorporation of Ulhôa, Canto, Rezende e Guerra – Advogados in 1977. He graduated from Universidade do Estado da Guanabara – UEG, currently Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro- UERJ, in 1968. He obtained a postgraduate degree from Centro de Estudos e Pesquisas no Ensino de Direito – Ceped/FGV in 1969.
His practice focuses mainly on tax law and corporate law, focusing on joint ventures incorporation and corporate groups restructuring, including merger, amalgamation, spin-off, acquisitions and sale of privately and publicly-held companies.
He was a board member of the Bolsa de Valores do Rio de Janeiro – BVRJ and contributed to the drafting of several bills, amongst which is the law that created Plano Real (currency reform); he lectured at seminars organized by the Associação Brasileira de Direito Financeiro – ABDF, Brascan Group and Universidade Cândido Mendes – UCAM.
International publications, such as Chambers Global, Chambers Brazil and Legal 500, often acknowledge him as a reference in Brazil in matters regarding corporate tax law and as a lawyer with great technical quality. He is currently ranked as a Senior Statespeople, by Chambers and Partners.
He was admitted to the Rio de Janeiro (OAB/RJ) and São Paulo (OAB/SP) Chapters of the Brazilian Bar Association in 1969 and 1990 respectively. He has also been a member of the Associação Brasileira de Direito Financeiro – ABDF and of International Fiscal Association – IFA. His native language is Portuguese and he is fluent in English and French.
