João Dodsworth Cordeiro Guerra joined Ulhôa Canto in 1966 and became a partner in 1975. He graduated from Universidade do Estado da Guanabara, currently Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro- UERJ, in 1968 and obtained a postgraduate degree from Centro de Estudos e Pesquisas no Ensino de Direito – Ceped in 1969.

His practice has focused mainly on tax and corporate law, including capital market and project finance.

He gave lectures at courses organized by the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo- USP; Brazilian Financial Law Association (Associação Brasileira de Direito Financeiro) – ABDF; Brazilian Bar Association, Rio de Janeiro Chapter- OAB/RJ, Sindicado da Indústria da Construção Civil do Rio de Janeiro – Sinduscon-Rio; Escola da Magistratura do Rio de Janeiro – EMERJ; Associação Nacional de Executivos de Finanças, Administração e Contabilidade – Anefec, and in the 43rd Congress of the International Fiscal Association- IFA in 1989 in Rio de Janeiro. He was also a professor of corporate law at the Masters´ Degree Program at Fundação Getúlio Vargas – FGV and of tax law at Universidade Cândido Mendes-UCAM. He was also the national rapporteur for topic “Tax treatment of corporate losses” at the 52nd IFA Congress, which took place in London, in 1998.

International publications, such as Chambers Global, Chambers Latin America, and Legal 500 acknowledge him as a reference as senior statesman in corporate tax in Brazil.

He has been a member of the Rio de Janeiro (OAB/RJ) and São Paulo (OAB/SP) Chapters of the Brazilian Bar Association since 1969 and 1990, respectively; as well as a member of the Brazilian Financial Law Association (Associação Brasileira de Direito Financeiro) – ABDF, and of the International Fiscal Association- IFA. His native language is Portuguese, and he is fluent in English and French.
